Minority Scholarships for everyone!

I go back and forth on this all the time in my head. I see the positives and, in some cases, necessities, of racial minority based scholarships but I'm always aware of the down-side that it may be denying scholarship funds to someone who actually deserves it more. But then again, why do smarter people need financial help? Wouldn't they logically be better off in the near future anyway by means of a good job thanks to their genetically superior brain? So it's the bottom of the barrel that needs some help, right? But that's like being rewarded for stupidity. Why would I pay for that? What? I'm not? A lot of these scholarships are privately funded? When you have conversations with yourself do you hear different voices like I do?

  2. And what percentage of "said group" is acceptable anyways I think at times.

Last year I heard a neighbor stating that his daughter got a scholarship for latinos. I was thinking, she goes to Israel every summer to spend time with relatives, I didn't even know she was latino!

  3. The reality is that the opening up of college opportunities to racial minorities has also opened college up to poor whites as well. The scary thing now is that the trend in education expenses is closing the door to a lot of people.

In any case, I think the proper response to claims of unfair advantages to minorities is simply to open up more opportunities for everyone, instead of accepting a system that pits people against one another for limited space.

  4. Personally, I don't have any problems with minority scholarships because they aim to help and support a particular group rather than affecting another, privately funded or not. I believe that scholarships should be based on merit and not race, and it would be in the best interest for them to apply for one that everyone else is. But as long as it doesn't negatively affect how others receive theirs, I see no harm done. People should really just mind their own business. And the issue of favoritism that comes with it- it exists everywhere so we deal with it the best that we can.
