Old School SAM: A Racist is a racist is a racist

Yeah, I've been called a racist (among other things). And depending on whose definition of "racist" you go by they may have a point. But I do differentiate people who do things for their race by harming others versus doing things for their race by supporting their own. If that makes me a racist sign me up.

  1. So, by that definition having pride in your heritage is automatically racist. Though I suppose that's also dependant on how you express it. Argh, political correctness is crazy sometimes.

  2. RACIST!!! :P

Seriously though, to get away from that stigmatization, I think it suffice to support other groups on their attempts to balance the scale.

I think today's SAMs (maybe as opposed to early SAMs) do just that. One just have to look at the cast and the themes.

In some cases, it does look racist when activists for a certain group shoo away people from other groups which also need help. But in other cases, well... we do what we can. If the guy can only look after his needing group and nothing more, at least those got somebody to look after them.

I agree it's not a trivial decision, though.

  3. It's good to see someone acknowledge that you don't have to be white to be racist. I've actually heard people say that some minority member or another couldn't be racist because they weren't white.

  4. I'm a white ethnic Canadian. I love your cartoons.

No, you do not have to be white to be a racist. However, supporting "our people" is not racist in my book. Putting down other races, cultures, and ethnicity is racist. Even more so if you use violence, terrorism, and extremist tactics.

I support small businesses run by women. Does that make me a racist (or sexist)? I support local businesses when possible. I purchase items made in Canada and the United States if I can. I only purchase foreign made products when I cannot find something made closer to home. Does that make me a racist?

To me a racist is someone who goes out of their way to denigrate another group of people. It is a negative thing. Supporting your own group is not necessarily racist.
