Probably the single most effective thing we can do to solve (or mitigate) humanity's problems is to stop procreating. Unfortunately the best way to slow procreation seems to be education (the more education a person has, the less likely they are to have (or have as many) children. Unfortunately, we seem to be just as far away from universal minimal (never mind higher) education as any other pie-in-the-sky dream: peace, minimal polluting energy, etc. etc.
The way things go I see only two ways out of overpopulation: colonization and war.
As Vance wisely pointed out, it's a treat of educated people to limit their offspring. Ever stopped to think what that means for evolution or society as a whole?
