A lot of people say the best way to get to know a different culture is to go out and experience it. Don't just read books about them, or worse, Wiki them. But then there are people who experience them and try to play themselves off as experts. Like people who can see other countries from their back porch...Speaking of which, did you hear Sarah Palin's dad said she left college in Hawaii because
she felt uncomfortable around so many Asians? Woohoo! We found her kryptonite! Maybe she should have gotten to know us a little better...
I recall a long time ago back in school, meeting many students coming over to study English and possibly get into the university as well. One muslim roommate of mine from Palistine said he would get good grades in order to get an American wife so he could get a visa to travel Israel freely. I asked him what other things he thought would get him an American wife, and he could only focus on getting good grades. I am hoping that he had learned a little more during his stay. He would not take any of my advice and constantly hung out with Palistinian friends he made there.
ReplyDeleteIn that same line of thought, I knew people who were in Japan for 6-7 years and did not learn any Japanese at all. It is possible to do so as many Japanese try to speak English, they started making English announcements in the train stations, etc. How well did they understand Japanese and Japanese society without learning the language?
~Joe desu.
And being a conservative, and one who is utterly unimpressed with the republicans, hope that Palin just fades away quietly. Oh bother. And c'mon you know that "Asian" usually does not included Japanese. やれやれ
Palin never said she could see Russia from her house. She said that there are parts of Alaska where you could stand and see the shores of Russia, which is undeniably true.
ReplyDeleteTina Fey, while playing Sarah Palin, said, "I can see Russia from my house."
Take a stand if you disagree with her ideas or politics, but Character Assassination is never nice, regardless of the political party. Fight with the truth, not slander
Has anyone read Palin's book? I'm kind of curious.
ReplyDeleteAbout the sharks... One documentary maker decided to swim in the Brisbane River (here in Queensland), to prove that it is safe and that there are no bull sharks. He got bitten by one.
